Bio
Asher Suss, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, received a BA and MA in International Relations from The Johns Hopkins University and a JD from The George Washington University in DC. During law school, Asher worked for a products liability law firm on air crash litigation, then he moved to New York where he worked for law firms in products liability and international trademarks, with clients such as Volkswagen, Philip Morris, Heinz and Hershey's. Asher has always had a love of music. At the age of 14, he graduated from the Peabody Conservatory Preparatory Division in saxophone and began studies privately with in New York with Joe Allard of the Juilliard School faculty. He also studied clarinet. In the early 80's, he restarted his musical studies by taking theory courses at the Juilliard School and private voice study with renowned tenor Charles Bressler (Asher is a bass-baritone). Around the same time, Mr. Suss left the practice of law for the field of arts administration. He held executive positions with the Long Island Philharmonic, the Washington Bach Consort and the Hoboken Chamber Orchestra. As Executive Director of the Steinway Foundation, he produced a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington for which he commissioned piano concerti from 3 prominent composers (Rodion Shchedrin, Lalo Schifrin and Lowell Liebermann), premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich and with three renowned piano soloists. Subsequent to this, he was an independent concert producer and also served as Executive Director of the National Association of Performing Arts Managers and Agents. In the latter capacity, he organized the first ever international conference of artists managers, held at the UN. Asher has also worked in computer graphics and was a project manager and quality control person for an online international investment bank, developing private label websites for banks around the world. Asher has been studying voiceover technique for several years now, with a great deal of practice making talking books for JBI International (founded as the Jewish Braille Institute). Because of his wide ranging experience and education, he is often called upon to record very complicated material with terminology in several languages and is also a resource to other readers at the Institute. In 2003, he was awarded the Candle of Understanding Award for his work with JBI, when he was cited for having given more hours that year there than any other volunteer in recent memory.
