A master of foreign languages, Asher Suss can read copy in Italian, French and German with no accent.
He can also read copy in Spanish, Portuguese and Hebrew and selected vocabulary in a smattering of other languages, including Yiddish (in September, 2005, he appeared in a Folksbiene Theater production of the Pirates of Penzance in Yiddish). Because of his extensive experience in the use and translation of foreign languages, he can pronounce difficult vocabulary and names in such diverse areas as law, music, and academic texts. And he can do a wide range of foreign accents in English, including Russian, Polish and other Eastern European, German, French, Italian and Indian.
Asher Suss has always been exposed to a variety of languages. Born to a family of immigrants (Mom from Montreal, father from Eastern Europe), he has always shown a facility for different languages. At home, he learned French, Yiddish, German and Italian. In junior and senior high school, he studied both Latin and French. In college, he added German to the mix. In grad school, he spent a year in Italy and has spoken Italian every opportunity he has.
Even before he finished law school, he spent two years collecting, reading and translating documents in Portuguese and several other languages for the prosecution of a law suit arising from the crash of a Brazilian airliner. He handled similar documents for Dutch victims of the crash of two 747s in Tenerife.
His next career move was to work on international trademark protection for major corporate clients, overseeing and checking the work of local attorneys in jurisdictions covering the entire world.
Asher also had a part in the recent internet boom, working on the localization of private label investment banking web sites in such diverse languages as German, Dutch, and British and Canadian English.
Most recently, Asher's experience in making talking books has called on him to read German, French, Italian, Hebrew, Aramaic, and even some Greek and Polish.
